OK - so not many Houston real estate investors look to Donald Trump as a "guru" as we know it. But why not? The guy has made, lost and made again a fortune. We won't regurgitate his history here (here is a bio). We will talk about his value as a real estate guru. PERSONALITY He is truly the single best known real estate investor in the world. His fame makes it possible for him to be the most successful real estate guru in the world. Notice the use of superlatives? Its a Trump trademark. He is building the biggest this...The largest residential condo project that...Saturday Night Live makes a mockery of his arrogance. And arrogance is another trademark. Trump believes that arrogance in a leader gives underlings confidence in a leader. We hate that idea because we hate working in miserable places. It works for Trump. But for all his personality traits that we don't like, he is clearly charismatic. We watch his show. We even listen to his 30 second business tips during radio Office Depot spots. QUALITY REAL ESTATE EDUCATION Donald Trump seems to write the same book every few years. He changes the title of the book, rearranges a few chapters and changes the font size. Voila. Another book full of cliches that gives little to no practical real estate help. But Donald Trump does focus on one type of deal and teaches it in his books. The type of deal is classified as: BIG. You can focus your time on a little deal or a big deal. They take the same amount of time. So which would you work on? The Donald lives his answer. And he doesn't mess with teaching the rest of us how to do it. He prefers we watch his TV show. UPDATE 16JAN06 As you probably now know, The Donald has started a University for learning real estate investing and other business skills. He, as usual, chose a quiet and understated name - Trump University. Don't expect Trump to teach, or any of the professors from top-tier business schools. Here is a hint: most of them are adjunct professors, not Deans. And, he has asked an experienced real estate investor to teach real estate investing. We find that novel in the guru world (Jay D. Gottlieb). So much so, that we almost took the class. But then, alas, we read through the course syllabus. This nationwide, teleseminar purports to teach how to find leads where you live. Since Mr. Trump nor his professors could possibly teach us that as a small part of their course, we think the course provides, at best, an adequate overview from a real estate investing veteran. Our prediction: Story-telling style, no real meat. How could there be. If you have any comments, or would like another Guru reviewed, please email.
